Water damage does not always look like water. It can look like a stain, a smell, a gap in the flooring or paint that suddenly bubbles. People in Magna, UT often notice the sign long before they find the source, which is why a clear picture of the warning signs helps.

This guide sorts the signs by where you see them.

On Ceilings And Walls

Brown or yellow rings

Water has passed through and left minerals at the edge of the stain.

Bubbling or peeling paint

Moisture behind the paint is pushing it off.

Soft or bulging drywall

Board has absorbed water and lost strength.

Cracks and warped trim

Wet wood swells and drywall seams open.

On Floors

Hardwood cups or buckles. Laminate swells at the seams and edges. Vinyl lifts or curls. Carpet feels damp, smells musty or shows a dark outline along the wall. Tile may stay intact while the subfloor below is soaked, so loose or hollow tiles are a clue.

Do not rely on the surface. A moisture meter reads what is inside the floor.

The Three Water Categories

Looking at the damage is only half the picture. The published ANSI/IICRC S500 standard sorts water by contamination. Category 1 comes from a clean source such as a supply line. Category 2 contains some contaminants, such as washing machine discharge. Category 3 is grossly contaminated, such as sewage or floodwater.

The category tells a crew what can be dried and what has to come out, and it can worsen with time if clean water sits.

What To Do Next

  • Photograph the damage and note the date.
  • Find and stop the source if you can.
  • Keep wet areas ventilated and the door open to dry rooms.
  • Call for moisture readings if you are unsure.

If you are not sure the source is stopped, water mitigation is where to start, and for rebuilding afterwards see water damage repair.

Signs By Room

Kitchen

Warped cabinet bases, stains under the sink and a dishwasher that leaves a damp floor edge.

Bathroom

Soft floor near the toilet, loose tile and caulk that keeps failing.

Laundry

Dark outline under the washer and a musty smell in the closet.

Basement

Efflorescence on concrete, damp corners and peeling paint.

Signs That Mean Act Now

A bulging ceiling, water dripping from a light fixture, a wall that is wet to the touch, a sewage smell from a floor drain or standing water near electrical equipment all mean the situation is urgent. Shut off the water, keep clear of electrical hazards and call the 24/7 line.

Signs that can wait a day for a call are old stains that are dry and firm, with no growth in size. Even those deserve a moisture reading before you paint.

When Appearances Fool You

A dry stain can look serious, and a wet wall can look fine. Paint hides moisture, and carpet can feel dry on top while the pad is soaked. Hidden spaces, like under a dishwasher or behind a toilet, can leak for weeks.

A moisture meter and thermal camera replace guesswork. If you are unsure, call for readings instead of waiting to see whether things get worse.

Using A Moisture Meter At Home

A basic pin or pinless meter costs little and gives a number for drywall and wood. Compare a suspect spot with a dry wall in the same room. A reading much higher than the dry spot suggests moisture. A meter does not diagnose the source, but it shows where to look and gives you something concrete to tell a crew.

Magna notes

Older Buildings Show It Differently

Local histories describe a building wave of single-family homes south and east of Magna's Main Street in the 1970s, and Main Street itself is lined with older brick buildings, with the Empress Theatre listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Older plaster and brick hide water differently than modern drywall. Plaster can stay hard while the lath behind it is wet, and brick wicks moisture upward from the base. If you manage an older building, a moisture reading is more reliable than a visual check.

Insurance Notes

Insurers treat sudden and accidental losses differently from gradual ones. Photographs showing the date and progression of damage help. Ask your insurer which category your loss fits.

Signs FAQs

Not always. Old stains can be dry. Active ones grow, feel damp or reappear after rain or after a fixture is used.

Yes. It can sit inside walls, under floors and above ceilings for weeks. Moisture meters and thermal imaging find it.

Mold can begin within a couple of days in wet porous materials, so early drying lowers the risk.

It means something is damp. It may be condensation or a small leak, and a reading tells you which.

Inspections are available across Salt Lake City and West Valley City too.
